Choosing the Right Incubator for Your Laboratory
Incubators provide controlled thermal environments for biological cell growth, enzyme reactions, and wastewater analysis. However, selecting between a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) incubator and a Bacteriological incubator is critical to testing accuracy.
1. Temperature Range & Cooling Capability
BOD Incubators: Equipped with both hermetically sealed cooling compressors and electric heating elements, operating across a range of 5°C to 60°C. They maintain the standard 20°C temperature required for 5-day wastewater BOD tests even when ambient room temperatures exceed 35°C.
Bacteriological Incubators: Feature heating-only mechanisms starting from ambient +5°C up to 70°C. They cannot cool below room temperature.
Comparison Summary
| Feature | BOD Incubator | Bacteriological Incubator |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Temp | 20°C constant | 37°C standard culture |
| Cooling Unit | Refrigeration Compressor | None (Heating only) |
| Primary Use | Wastewater, Seed Germination | Pathogen Culture, Agar Plates |
| Airflow | Forced Convection Blower | Gravity or Mild Convection |
For water testing laboratories, a BOD incubator is mandatory under CPCB and NABL analytical guidelines.
