Choosing the Right Incubator for Your Laboratory

Incubators provide controlled thermal environments for biological cell growth, enzyme reactions, and wastewater analysis. However, selecting between a Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) incubator and a Bacteriological incubator is critical to testing accuracy.

1. Temperature Range & Cooling Capability

BOD Incubators: Equipped with both hermetically sealed cooling compressors and electric heating elements, operating across a range of 5°C to 60°C. They maintain the standard 20°C temperature required for 5-day wastewater BOD tests even when ambient room temperatures exceed 35°C.

Bacteriological Incubators: Feature heating-only mechanisms starting from ambient +5°C up to 70°C. They cannot cool below room temperature.

Comparison Summary

Feature BOD Incubator Bacteriological Incubator
Standard Temp 20°C constant 37°C standard culture
Cooling Unit Refrigeration Compressor None (Heating only)
Primary Use Wastewater, Seed Germination Pathogen Culture, Agar Plates
Airflow Forced Convection Blower Gravity or Mild Convection

For water testing laboratories, a BOD incubator is mandatory under CPCB and NABL analytical guidelines.
